ANGEL & HALSEY ADOPTED


Angel & Halsey are a mother and daughter pair: nine and seven years old respectively. They had lived their entire lives in a happy home, until their beloved human companion passed away, leaving them with an uncertain future at best.

Although beautiful, healthy and affectionate, Angel and Halsey lingered for more than half a year at FurEver Friends. FurEver Friends wanted to keep the girls together, and few potential adopters were willing to consider one senior aged kitty, nevermind two. But in late May, all that changed. A husband and wife saw their picture on the Internet. They reasoned what many cat owners already know: two isn't that much more work than one, and it's twice the fun!!! They took Halsey and Angel to their new home the following week. We know the girls will be very happy and well cared for.

GREAT NEWS...

SPEEDY ADOPTED!!!


Speedy, our disabled two year old tuxedo kitty found a furever home of her own in April of 2005. Speedy's front leg had been injured in a car accident when she was just a kitten. The break was never set by a veterinarian, and it healed in a badly twisted position. Speedy got along fine on her leg, but the obvious deformity caused many potential adopters to turn away. We're so thankful that Speedy's new family was able to look beyond her disability and see Speedy for the truly wonderful and lovable cat that she is. We wish Speedy and her new family all the best.

SPEEDY UPDATE...we just received a note from Speedy's new family in Etowah:

"Hi, I just would like you to know that speedy is doing great and we love her to peices!!!!!! She has already found her spots in the house she likes. We have a sun room that looks out to the bird feeders and she has been watching all day. She seems to like the windows the best. Thanks for letting us take her and she is in good hands. Take care....Brenna"


MORE GREAT NEWS...

POLKA-DOT ADOPTED!!!


FurEver Friends is happy to announce that another one of our special-needs kitties has found a home in April of 2005. Polka-dot has been adopted by "Megan" and her family. They already had one kitty who needed a companion, and they especially wanted to help a special-needs cat. They saw Polka-dot on Petfinder and fell in love.

As you can see in the picture above, Polka-dot is vision impaired. A kittenhood disease / infection caused irreparable scarring to the cornea of her left eye. She's since recovered, but the lens of that eye remains milky and transluscent. It doesn't seem to bother her any, but her tear ducts leak and stain the white furr on her face. She needs a little help keeping her eye clean, but other than that, she's just a normal cat who loves attention, affection, treats, and playtime.

Still, the sight of her scarred and weeping eye made it difficult for Polka-dot, and her sister Sara (who shares the same condition-see below), to find a home. Many potential adopters overlooked both kitties because of their appearance. We're so happy that Megan and her family were willing to adopt Polka-dot. Megan's only regret?...that she couldn't adopt both Polka-dot and Sara. We remain hopeful that Sara will find her own furever home, very soon.

EVEN MORE GREAT NEWS...

MIDNIGHT ADOPTED!!!


This Spring truly has been a good season for Special-Needs cats at FurEver Friends. In March of 2005, our handsome and regal long haired FIV+ kitty found a furever home of his own. Our thanks go out to his former foster family, and the family that took this special needs kitty into their hearts and home. Midnight was a stray who didn't manage to get rescued until after he contracted Feline Aides. Many potential adopters hesitate to help a special needs cat like Midnight, but what his new family understood is that FIV+ cats can live long, healthy, and happy lives if they remain indoors in a relatively low stress environment, eat a healthy and nutritious diet, get plenty of love, and receive regular veterinary check-ups (especially at the first sign of illness). Midnight is a real character who loves to take walks on a leash, enjoys car rides, and seeks out the company of humans and other cats. Midnight's story is testimony to the fact that there is hope for FIV+ kitties, and an alternative to euthenasia.

Most experts now acknowledge that Feline Aides is primarily a disease spread by un-neutered males who transfer the virus through deep bite wounds or mating. Amongst groups of altered animals, the risk of contagion is minimal. If you'd like to know more about FIV, call or email FurEver Friends and we'll refer you to resources and veterinarians who can help. Currently we have no other FIV+ cats in our care, and can only take FIV+ cats into our network if the surrenderer is willing to foster the cat indoors until a new home is found.

Building for Sanctuary Found

FurEver Friends has located a building, and converted it to a sanctuary for FurEver Friends cats and kittens awaiting adoption. The facility is designed to comply with all state and local laws and regulations regarding the sheltering of animals, and passed the state shelter inspection in January '05.


Groups of cats have segregated rooms where they can run, play, or relax together in a "home" like environment. As you can see in the pictures above, almost every room has a big window where the cats can sit and sun themselves, or watch the activity at the adjacent lake. All the rooms have furniture and "hide-aways" where the cats can cuddle and feel safe. And we're in the process of building additional shelves and perches where the cats can climb, jump, repose, and get up off the floor.

There are accomodations for cats who need to be isolated during intake or while recovering from illness or surgery. The facility is maintained by volunteers, but is not open to the public. Adoptions will continue to be conducted at the Asheville SuperPetz on Brevard Road.

Who We Are

FurEver Friends Animal Rescue Network is a no-kill rescue organization located in Western North Carolina. Our shelter facility has been relocated and re-opened in December of 2006 and is located in Old Fort, near the Buncombe / McDowell county line. We assist clients primarily from Buncombe County as well as surrounding counties and ocassionally from surrounding states as necessary. We do our best to help all those that come to us or try to recommend alternatives to them if we cannot help them immediately. Presently our shelter is setup primarily for cats and kittens while our network is both cat and dog oriented. All of the animals in our Network outside our shelter are kept in private foster homes where they receive the love and care of a family environment.

Adopting a friend

FurEver Friends carefully screens all potential homes to be certain that the animal they are interested in is appropriate for their home and lifestyle. The potential home completes a screening application and signs a legally binding adoption contract. The adoption fee includes Spay/Neuter surgery, testing for Feline Aides (FIV) and Feline Leukemia (FeLV), vaccinations for Distemper (FVRCP) and Feline Leukemia, vaccination for Rabies (age permitting), treatment for round worm, tape worms, fleas, ticks, and earmites, as needed. Dogs are heartworm tested and get one month heartworm preventative. Depending on the age of the animal, and the length of time it has been in our care, vaccinations normally require boosters at some date after the date of adoption. This will include both the core vaccines as well as the State mandated Rabies vaccine. A complete medical record is provided with each adoption. We reserve the right to decline to adopt an animal for any reason. All animals adopted are required to be Inside Only. Confining the animal to the inside of the owners residence is required for the safety and health of the animal.

Come Visit Us!

FurEver Friends now operates a shelter. The facility can be visited by pre-arranged appointment if you would like to visit one of the animals in our care that is housed at the shelter facility. FurEver Friends conducts a weekly adoption event every Sunday at the SuperPetz store located at 825 Brevard Road in Asheville (across from the Biltmore Square Mall) between the hours of 10:30 AM and 6:00 PM. A few animals are also permitted to remain in the store during the week. You may ask any of the store employees for assistance if you'd like to meet or adopt an animal during regular store hours. Alternately animals may be seen by special appointment as time and scheduling permit.
